Circle Question: What do you cherish most in life?
Luke 14:26 – then what about this?
Now when we consider we are to hate our wives, faither, mother, etc…. C.S. Lewis answers it this way in his book called ” The Four loves” in reference to this specific scripture:
”
It is no doubt easy enough to love the fellow-creature [fellow humans] less and to imagine that htis is happening because we are learning to love God more, when the real reason may be different. we may only be mistaking the decays of nature for the increase of Grace.
Love proves that it is unworthy to take the place of God by the fact that it cannot even remain itself and do what it promises to do without God’s Help.
[key line here]
When God rules in a human heart, though he may sometimes have to remove certain of its native authorities altogether, He often continues others in their offices and, by subjecting their authority to His, gives it for the first time a firm basis.”
What he is saying here is that God is actually inviting us to leave behind our natural faculty of loving mom, because thats what we have always known. We dont know anything different and thus associate all love with those types of natural affections. God is inviting us to let go of our natural and shallow relational values, let Him reign in us, and show us how to truly love one another – love as Christ Loved the church.
The word hate here in the greek lexicon can also be used as “hate, destest or to love less”
If we prescribe to the latter definition, this whole scripture makes complete sense in God’s invitation to love our wives and families less, so that God can fully show us how to love them more ๐
Hope this makes sense, let me know what you think or if you have any questions ๐
What is love? Is it an action? Or emotion
